A tournament compresses a season into a weekend. The hard parts are the dependencies: a delayed quarter-final cascades into the semis, and a no-show has to resolve into an advancement without a scramble at the results table.
Group stage into knockout
Seed teams into groups, then advance the right teams into a knockout bracket. The bracket should fill in automatically as group results come in.
When a knockout match is decided, the winner should propagate into the next round without anyone re-typing names.
Field waves and rest
With multiple fields you run simultaneous matches in waves; the scheduler must avoid double-booking a team and honour a minimum rest between a team’s games.
Multi-venue tournaments add travel time — bake it into the slot length so you don’t schedule a team to be in two places at once.
Plan for disruption
Weather delays and field closures are normal, not exceptional. Before you shorten matches or compress a stage, preview which fixtures, teams and referees are affected.
Forfeits, walkovers and awarded results need a policy up front so the bracket resolves consistently.
