A round-robin is the fairest way to decide a league or group: every team plays every other team the same number of times, so the final table reflects results against the whole field rather than a lucky draw. Single vs double round-robin
In a single round-robin every team plays every other once — N teams gives N−1 rounds and N(N−1)/2 games. A double round-robin plays everyone twice, usually once home and once away, for N(N−1) games, which is the norm for a league season.
Pick single when time or fields are tight (a group stage, a short season); pick double when you want home-and-away fairness across a full campaign.
Odd team counts and byes
With an odd number of teams, exactly one team rests each round — a “bye”. The circle method adds a bye slot and rotates it so every team sits out the same number of times and no round is lopsided.
Plan for the bye: a resting team is a chance for a make-up game, a referee clinic, or simply a lighter field day.
Balancing home and away
Good round-robin ordering alternates each team’s home and away games so no one plays five straight away fixtures. The circle method handles this by flipping the pairing orientation each round.
